2 months!!

So I have officially two months of school left..yay. ^_^ However I need to start packing up my room and the things that I will not need for college. Due to the fact that I am a major pack-rat, I am have some difficulties with this. So.... I was wondering if anyone had ideas on what to take and what not to take. It is apparent that I have wayyy too much stuff and could not possibly fit it all in my dorm. But I don't know where to begin packing. So if you have any advice it would be much appreciated. :)

For the next week pay attention to the stuff you use all the time. That is the "Have to" stuff. Anything else, you can pick up at a D.I. Sara found she wanted a prom dress, but that she had too many blankets. She also had to ship some knick-knacks home. But she is a lot closer. Good luck

I would take as LITTLE as possible. Your dorm room is tiny and I would imagine your roommate will have a ton of stuff she'll want to bring...and it stinks to be in a tiny room with a ton of stuff. I would bring a little radio, 2 weeks worth of clothes (in case you cant get to your laundry for awhile and whatever you need for blankets and maybe a few pictures. Almost as if you were packing for a cruise. Especially since when you are on a cruise- you always end up buying all sorts of stuff while you are there but you have no where to put it because you already have too much! There are so many places in Provo for students to buy stuff cheaply so once you get there, I'd get your paper, pens, notebooks and very important- food to hide under your bed or something so you if you want a snack you don't have to count on the food you put in your kitchen..I've heard some funny stories about roommates eating other people's food! haha...probably happens more to guys than to girls but beware either way! :) Oh! Don't forget a couple of favorite posters and a few family pics, they are really helpful when you are feeling homesick. You probably knew that but just in case, Im throwing that in there!

Ooooh - I love going through and getting rid of!!!!

There are a couple of things you could do to get "inspired!" The first thing I do (since I donate most of my old stuff) is imagine the person/family that will be receiving my old stuff and think of how much they will enjoy using it. This gets me in the right frame of mind. Secondly, think about what it will be like to pack up and move by yourself, since you will not live in Heritage forever. Imagine the best way to do it. For example, I had my rolling luggage, a garment bag for hang ups, a large tupperware container, one small container for toiletries and makeup and a box that my school notebooks and books lived in. Anything that didn't fit in those didn't make the cut and got donated. Another way to purge is to pull out everything you have and arrange it in piles. For example, you would have one pile of all your t-shirts, one pile of all your "blouse" type shirts, another pile of jeans, another pile of flip flops, another pile of pants and so on - do the same thing for toileteries, nick-knacks and candles. Then, decide what your top five are from each pile, or some kind of number and get rid of the rest. I cleaned out my kitchen drawers the other day and found out that we had a plethora of knives that weren't being used. They got donated - what a good feeling to get rid of stuff!!! Another thing to keep in mind is things that might mean a lot to you right now, ie high schooly stuff, might not mean anything to you at college. For example, I had a t-shirt that said Class of 2001 on it - I never wore it at college. I didn't want anyone to know that I was a freshmen!!! And no one really cared that I graduated from Artesia High School, so that t-shirt never got worn, either. And Becca's right - dorm rooms are small, apartments are small, if you serve a mission, you'll be moving all the time, when you get married your first home/apartment will be small so now is a great time to get used to living simply. It's a great way to be! It makes doing laundry and keeping things neat and tidy SO easy when you don't have a lot of stuff. Way long answer, sorry!!!! Have you ever seen the show "Clean Sweep" on TLC? Lots of great purging ideas there, too!

Becca stole my two weeks worth of clothes idea. As for other stuff, I would say the thing you need least, which everyone brings is a computer- all you need is a jump drive to store your files on, then just use the school's computers for email/homework/etc. Ummmm... I would also suggest getting one of those hanging cloth "drawers" (if there is a decent size closet for your use) or a standing one for little stuff that doesn't really have a place but you need/use everyday. I've also recently discovered that a boppy pillow is great for resting a book on to read when you are leaning back in bed. Oh- if a book isn't REQUIRED, wait until class starts to find out if it will be helpful before buying it. Some teachers seriously teach exactly what is in the book, making having that book completely useless. I'll write more if I think of more..
